Brief

In 1948, HMT Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury carrying passengers from the Caribbean who would help rebuild post-war Britain. On 3 July 2025, REACH — in partnership with CBRE and JLL — brought guests together at the Dock Shed, at British Land's Canada Water, to celebrate that arrival and the generation it represents.

Vivid Squad was asked to photograph the evening as it unfolded: the welcome, the speeches, the music and dancing, and the conversations between guests. The images needed to give the hosts and partners something to share afterwards, and to show an occasion with real cultural weight as well as a corporate gathering.

About the Project

Corporate culture and heritage events carry a different responsibility from a product launch. The point of the evening was recognition — of the Windrush generation, of Caribbean heritage, and of the people in the room whose families carry that story — so we photographed it with that in mind. We framed the speakers with the room around them, so the images show an audience listening rather than a lone figure at a lectern, and we stayed close enough to catch the reactions: the laughter, the applause, the moments when a line landed.

Dr Audrey Allwood and British Land CEO Simon Carter spoke to a full Dock Shed, under bunting made from the flags of Caribbean nations. An information board asked guests "What do you know about Windrush?" and a screen carried the message "Solidarity with Windrush". We made sure those details were in the frame, because they are what turn a set of event photos into a record of what the evening was for.

Then the room changed pace. A steelpan band played indoors and later outside the Dock Shed on the Canada Water dockside, and carnival dancers in full feathered costume performed before pulling guests onto the floor to dance with them. Those are fast, colourful moments that only happen once, so we worked the edges of the room to catch both the performers and the guests joining in, without getting in anyone's way.

Between the set pieces, we photographed the networking: guests talking on the balcony with the City of London skyline behind them, sharing Caribbean food and drinks at the tables, and catching up with colleagues and friends. Those candid images are often the ones organisers use most, because they show who came and how it felt to be there.

Canada Water is a place we know well. We photographed the Boardwalk launch there for British Land, and have since returned for Round the Dock, the London Marathon and the summer markets. Knowing the Dock Shed, its light and the best angles over the dock means less briefing for organisers and more time spent on what matters on the night.

FAQ

Common questions

Do you photograph corporate culture and heritage events in London?

Yes. We photographed the Windrush celebration hosted by REACH with CBRE and JLL at the Dock Shed, Canada Water — speeches, steelpan, carnival dancers and guest networking — for the hosts and partners to share.

Can you cover speeches and performances at the same event?

Yes. At the Windrush celebration we covered speeches from Dr Audrey Allwood and British Land CEO Simon Carter, then steelpan and carnival performances, adjusting our positions as the evening changed pace so nothing was missed.

Can you photograph an event run by several partner organisations?

Yes. The Windrush celebration was hosted by REACH in partnership with CBRE and JLL at a British Land estate. We make sure every partner is represented in the coverage and deliver a gallery all of them can use.

Have you photographed events at Canada Water before?

Yes, many times. We have covered the Canada Water Boardwalk launch, Round the Dock, the London Marathon and the summer markets for British Land, so we know the Dock Shed and the dockside well.
